The arrival of the palanquin and its escort, by Hokusai.

Changes from drawing to print:

• The drawing is noticeably larger on the right-hand side than in the print, and slightly larger from top to bottom. It stops short, however, 5mm before the left-hand margin in the print. The positioning is practically unchanged, with the exception of the higher dark mountain on the left-hand page which has been reduced in size in the print.
• In the drawing, the faces of the figures are drawn in a cursory line, their expressions are quite individualised. In the print, the lines are meticulous but the expressions have become stereotyped.
• The palanquin’s height has been slightly lowered, the porters and guards closest to the rear of the palanquin have been slightly enlarged.
   

Artist's shorthand:

• The pine needles in the foreground : six  are carefully finished where the needles are drawn one by one, fifteen are drawn one by one but surrounded by a circle, and alongside more than a hundred empty circles.
• The flat black areas, as usual.

The very unusual contrast between the almost finished landscape and the quickly drawn figures, as a composition study, leads us to believe that this shita-e could possibly have been a first sketch.
