2 C.  Prostrate monk, by Hokusai.

Published in Kana dehon gonichi no bunshô, vol. 1, p. 17 A, in 1809.

Changes from drawing to print:

In the drawing, the monk appears to have been drawn at the same time as the 3 nobles who are looking at him. However, careful observation helps us realise that he was drawn sufficiently smaller for us to see that they are two separate drawings for two different projects (2C and 2B).

2 D.  A dog and two puppies, by Hokusai.

2 E.  Head and shoulders of a man, from the front, by Hokusai.

Published in Chûkô itako bushi  (Loyal songs of Itako), vol. 5, pp. 11B –12A, in 1809 (see Fig. 6B)

This sketch is one of the very rare examples of a drawing with lines that cross, an indication of the speed with which it was executed. The position of this sketch speaks for itself and confirms the previous note: squeezed into a tiny space, it is clearly a hasty study, an idea put onto paper.

2 F. and 2 G.  Head and shoulders of a man, from the side, by Hokusai  and Tethered, bucking horse, by a pupil.

Published in Chûkô itako bushi, vol. 5, pp. 16B – 17A, in 1809.

The drawing 2G of a horse has been used twice: Once, tethered as in 2G and also without the rope, in the same book, same volume, pp. 20-21 (with the drawings seen in Fig. 6C)
