This is the only known sketch by Hokusai in the kanô style intended for a ukiyo-e illustration. Drawn on a single page although it is a study for a print on two pages, it has all the spontaneity and the feel of an idea “thrown onto paper”.  It is quite clear that no other stroke could so well suit a preliminary study of mass and balance of tensions than a rough sketch in light and shade, which is why Hokusai used a kanô style sketch for a ukiyo-e illustration.
