Artist's shorthand:
The action in this drawing is
centred on
the exchange between the two main characters, each in the middle of a
page. The figure on the left, however, is intriguing. He seems to answer
the frank and spontaneous gesture of the other person with an ambiguous attitude
and contorted posture. More surprisingly, we do not find in this figure the
deliberate strength of line seen in the other person. This reminds us of the
rather stiff and gestured figure, with a fairly inexpressive face, and stiffly
hanging clothes with weaker lines, seen in Fig. 3.
A highly magnified examination of the lines confirms that the figure on the
right and the background have been drawn by the same person, which was clearly
Hokusai. On the other hand, the figure on the left was drawn by someone else,
with less strength and self assurance.
This leads us to believe that Hokusai and a pupil each drew one of the two main
characters. Hokusai then finished the rest of
the drawing by adding the background scenery, including the rounded rocks,
pointed grass and
tiny figures
he liked to do during this period.
