MangaAn assembled group with severed heads, studies of figures, by Hokusai.

This sheet consists of studies for three different illustrations, the chronology of which can be easily established and clearly shows Hokusai’s working method. The only exception to this is that Hokusai would generally reuse a sheet two years later and in this case it was 5 years.

  1. In 1808, Hokusai used a new sheet to draw freehand without any preparatory work, an important sketch for Chinsetsu yumiharizuki. Using almost all the space on the sheet, and published without any major changes, this spontaneous sketch seems to also be a kind of shita-e (10A).
  2. In 1813, Hokusai took this sketch, which was probably somewhat forgotten, and used most of the remaining space to do four sketches in a careful ukiyo-e style, which were published in Oguri gaiden ( The legend of Lord Oguri), vol. 2 (10B).
  3. At the same time he used the last remaining space to draw five small sketches in a cursory style which were published in the following volume(10C)

10 A.  An assembled group with severed heads.

Published in Chinsetsu yumihari zuki, vol. 3, pp. 15B – 16A, in 1808.

10 B.  Four men.

Published in Oguri gaiden, vol. 2, pp. 3B – 4A, in 1813.

10 C.  Five small figures.

Published in Oguri gaiden, vol. 3, pp. 19 – 20, in 1813.
